Press release from 07/20/09 - The H1N1 influenza virus, also known as Mexican flu, can cause an epidemic and even pandemic outbreak. For Riken, one of the most renowned international research-institutes in the area of life sciences and ESE, with its award winning miniature reader technology, it is a win-win situation. Riken and ESE cooperate to develop a portable and sensitive test system based on the unique molecular DNA/RNA-test method “SmartAmp”. Riken is responsible for the development of the assay, whereas ESE contributes the ESE-Quant Tube Scanner, a stand-alone test device that reads out the swine flu virus test on site and much faster than conventional methods. “Preliminary test results in Germany and Japan proved the future potential of the point of care device” says Alexander Lezhava, senior scientist at the Omics Science Center, RIKEN in Japan. And he adds: “Our joint efforts are so promising, that we decided to inform the public on TV.” The News TV Channel NHK reported on the first prototype test system developed by Riken and ESE GmbH.
